Plain shaft, Holland toe — stitching left off on purpose, so the only line on this boot is the one the toe draws.
Most western shafts carry a stitch pattern; this one does not. What is left is an uninterrupted surface from the vamp to the top edge, which makes the boot read taller and considerably more sober than a decorated one. At the front, the Holland is a cutter shape: squared enough to sit flat, tapered enough that it never looks blunt.
A plain shaft is the western boot that behaves in company. It goes under a suit trouser without announcing itself, and it does not fight a patterned shirt the way an elaborately stitched shaft does. That makes it the useful pair to own if only one pair is going to be owned — an evening boot, a business boot, and a boot for an ordinary Tuesday, all in one shape. Sizing on a cutter toe is snugger through the front; check the width before the length.
