The Dugan is a western boot in the plain sense of the word — shaped through the shaft, sized to be pulled on, and made to be worn rather than displayed.
There is no ornament to describe here, and that is the case for it. What a boot like this offers is the shape itself: a shaft that stands on its own, a vamp that takes the foot, a heel that sits under it. Everything that makes a western boot recognisable from across a room is present, and nothing has been added on top of it.
Plain boots are the ones that get worn out. They ask nothing of the rest of an outfit, they suit a working week as readily as a Friday evening, and they never look like they were chosen to make a point. Wear them under a straight-leg trouser and only the vamp shows; wear them with something slimmer and the whole line of the boot reads. If you are between sizes, decide on width first — that is where western boots are won or lost.
